Butch Update

On Monday I told you about Butch our pied butcherbird's eye trouble. I had to return home from work early that day because we were supposed to go to an evening meeting, and so I got home while it was still light. I found Gitie by our frangipani tree talking to Butch, who, apart from detecting light changes had gone completely blind.

Accordingly I was able to catch her and take her to the vet, expecting the worst. But the vet was able to clean all the crusting off her eyes, and checked her throat for infection and checked her breathing, and said everything but her eyes was okay. So we have to keep Butch with us for ten days, cleaning her eyes with antibiotic twice a day. We're keeping our fingers crossed that the infection clears up with treatment. It is quite difficult to explain to a little bird that she can't be let out. Luckily we have been able to take her outside (in her cage) and she has seen her family each day.

We'll keep you posted!
